Syllabus
Unit-1
Introduction to sustainable development: Need & concept of sustainability; Objectives of Sustainable Development, Population, Poverty and Pollution, Environment and Development linkages, vision of sustainable development (MDGs & SDGs); Nexus between technology & sustainable development; Historical development and Current practices, international efforts in the direction of sustainable development and their outcome.
Unit-2
Socio-economic development & sustainability: Fundamentals of ecology types of ecosystems & interrelationships, factors influencing sustainability of ecosystems, needs of present and future generation; issues, requirements for sustainability: food security and agriculture, renewable resources water and energy, non-renewable resources.
Unit-3
Sustainable development: various dimensions: Components of sustainability Complexity of growth and equity Social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, current challenges natural, political, socio-economic imbalance; needs of present and future generation Sustainability in national and regional context.
Unit-4
Framework for Sustainability: Analytical frameworks in sustainability studies, sustainability metrics: criteria and indicators, Hurdles to Sustainability Operational guidelines, current metrics and limitations; metrics for mapping and measuring sustainable development, Science and Technology for sustainable development.
Unit-5
Case studies & projects on sustainable development: Village resources (broad perspectives); visit to rural area with special attention to current challenges and thematic areas; village social hierarchy &economy; application of renewable energy and R-R-R concept.
